Dear AB and his gazillion hurt fans,
Seems like half the world has taken offense abt the SM comment. I agree with AB in that every country has its share of poverty and slums...it's just most of them try to deny/hide it. At the same time it is also true that films make an impact to the viewer's mind, esp the foreign viewers...as whatever is shown becomes their reality. Before expressing joy and pride over the achievement at the Golden Globes, take a moment to think why SM is being placed on a pedestal so high? Why is it that movies that protray our fast-developing nation never make it to the Golden Globes or the Oscars? Are they really after the truth? I really dont think so. It should be well-understood by now that the image of a "poor India" sells. And a Westerner just happened to make a film on this tried-and-tested formula and well voila! India has Golden Globes to its credit. Before reacting so emotionally, people should think why is it that films like Taare Zameen Par never make it to the Oscars? The answer is very clear if one truly wants to look at it straight in the eye. It just does not sell! So why should truth take over good/smart business sense? It just wont happen.
As far as bashing up of he media goes...all u sentimental fans...I would just like to point out that YOU are the main reason the media has to "cook-up" or plug stories. It is YOU who comprise the TRPs. It is YOU who pays to watch such news, and mind you, with great interest. It is YOU who spreads the news you happen to see on TV and lets not forget the Chinese whispers YOU yourself add to it while telling others. So there is nothing to be so surprised or hurt about as it boils down to YOUR needs and hunger of knowing what celebs are doing at every waking hour, the media just feeds. As it is the media is a reflection of the people and popular thought....so see yourself in it before mockig it! This is what YOU have become.

ReplyDeleteI do agree with your point. I have always wondered why a movie like Black couldnt make it the oscars - it was briliantly made! I guess what works with the Western World is India's poverty and Slums.. maybe for them we all will be snake-charmers. I for once agree with Amitabh Bachan and i appreciate that he bought this point up since some one like us would not have been able to make sucha big impact...
Anil Kapoor should relaise it too ...
hmm u r right but u must have seen he ws just waaayyy to happy...bouncing n prancing around at the Golden Globes. i don't think it has struck him yet...
ReplyDeleteTrust me people, it wont even strike him...Anil Kapoor for now is happy with his award..afterall thats wt he was pitching at..and people in general are selfish, they just look for their success, happiness n blah...why should tehy care about the image of their nation???
ReplyDeleteyou rightly said that we Indians are playing chinese wispers amongst ourselves..Im sure we all have seen the crap which our news channels sell to our indian mindsets...and since we indians dont ahve a real opinion we just buy it. So if an India TV tells me that it will snow in the Thar it will because some idiot on their channel said so......And we the media in a mad rush of TRP are forgetting that we are the watchdogs of society.....WATCHDOGS...well do we even remember tht term????
Its high time that we the Media align our goals, purose and Indian reality togther and help our foolish Indian mindsets to flaunt their real self...and just the way the world thinks taht we are grt at aping the West, then lets ape them..flaunt our nations, its resources, its culture and everything that makesus proud....And trust me when we do that there will be a lot of difference.. which is..India in its falunting will have a lot of substance and reality.. which West i doubt would ever have....

ReplyDeleteShveta, first of all welcome to the world of blogs... its a heavy start, i must say. Good that you have raised this topic in your blog. I too agree with both of you.. The other day, i was talking to one of my friend and we discussed the same thing that why movies which are directed so well are not in the list of Oscars.
ReplyDeleteAnd watching Anil Kapoor that day was something unbelievable. He really has to realize the worth of movies that have made a huge impact in India.
Cliched crap sells best in the west. That is probably what has made SM such a hotselling film in the west. I loved the point you made about the media. Instead of a genuine introspection of the larger statement SM is making, we are basking in the full glory of the film being about the subcontinent.
ReplyDeletefor now they are just too happy that they have achieved something this big for their nation...but how long will it last...it is no doubt a big thing but for all the wrong reasons...i wonder how it will do at the BO!

biases exist in every society. this is just another of making it evident.
what ppl need to realise is that altho SM is a film based in india, played by indian characters and has indian technicians in it, it is NOT an indian film. it is mere stupidity to hug it and proclaim proudly... there is no credit fro indians there, it is danny boyle's film adaptation (altho of course a r rahman, resul pookutty and the others have their own parts to play in its making).
